TuneUp Tip #4: Methods For Cleaning

Everyone has their own way of organizing their music, and TuneUp users especially take great care in the accuracy and fullness of an iTunes library. So, with that said, here are some helpful ways to manage the TuneUp cleaning process… try them out for yourself and see if it helps you TuneUp your music even better than before:

  • Drag & drop in batches. It’s a waste of time (and TuneUp!) to do songs one by one. We recommend up to 500 – and preferably of the same artist or album as that tends to get better Matching results. TuneUp can handle more than 500 tracks, in fact, users have reported throwing in their entire collection, but it just really depends on how well your machine can handle the load! In those cases though, it’s best to go take a walk, or head over to your local record store for a bit and then come back to check out the progress.
  • Finding the dirty tracks. If you ran through Analyze (that tiny brain icon in the top right corner) and got all depressed seeing just how incomplete and dirty your library truly is, then you are going to want to start cleaning ASAP. Obviously, the dirtiest tracks are the ones with no information at all. This is most common when there is no artist listed. The best way to find these big holes in your library is to go to your iTunes interface and click on the ‘Artist’ column. This will make iTunes alphabetize your artists A – Z (or Z – A). Scroll to the bottom (towards the Zs), and you will see that if iTunes has no info in artist, it will be added to the end. This way, you can assemble all the tracks without artists easily to drop into Clean!
  • Double-check. The best way to make sure that we found the right data for a specific song is to use the playback feature in Clean. Once TuneUp has Matches, you can click the gray arrow (on the left of the Artist name) which will provide a drop-down track listing of all of the songs on that specific album. If you aren’t sure about a single track, simply click the black arrow (on the far right of the drop-down listing). Listen through it to see if that’s it!
  • Let us know how YOU like to Clean!
