TuneUp Tip #7: What’s Your Preference?

Everyone likes choices. Here at TuneUp we understand that some people prefer root beer to diet cola or ping-pong to jump rope, so with this in mind, we built a robust set of preferences in TuneUp. The process of cleaning up and managing your digital music library is complex, and we wanted to make sure that you have as many filters, selections, and settings at your fingertips as possible. So let’s run through some of the basic Preferences that you can use to better clean your music collection.

First off, let’s open Preferences! On a PC right-click on the TuneUp icon in the system tray (right side of the Windows taskbar) to open the menu and then click Preferences. On a Mac, simply right-click anywhere within TuneUp and select Preferences. We are going to focus on the “Clean” tab of the Preferences menu for now. It’s got all the juicy stuff anyway.

A major issue that we have managed to filter for is compilation tagging. Basically, selecting this will direct searches for your music to original albums of the song… rather than “Now: That’s What I Call Music #76″. Unless you have a massive collection of Various Artist albums, this filter is super helpful.

Allowing TuneUp to write in your comment tag can be useful for when you go back through your collection searching out music that you have previously cleaned, however, if you use that section for you own personal comments, just deselect this feature.

Removing “feat.” or “featuring” from the Artist tag in your library can be a requirement when you prefer searching your library by artist. The featured artist will be written into the track title info rather than tagging along with the main artist release for that album. Similarly, merging artist names with “and” and “&” makes for a more unified tag and a simpler search for the artists in mind.

Finally, you have the option to take out disk endings (ie. Best of Blur [Disc One]). If you don’t need to deal with disk formats anymore, especially with consideration to your digital music files, then that information is relatively unnecessary – so we provide that small option for you.
