Tip #10: How Do You Prefer to Clean?

So, you’ve got your library looking good after using TuneUp for a while, but still have a few little nit-picky things that are bothering you? Try using Clean Preferences to filter things down a bit. There are a bunch of different categories that TuneUp can edit when cleaning your music, and today, we’re going to take a look at how to use them.

To begin, you want to go to “Preferences” and click on the “Clean” tab. Then, under the clean tab, you’ll see a whole list of neat cleaning features you can choose from:

  • Remove “featuring” and “feat.” From Artist: This feature tells TuneUp to remove the “featuring [artist]” from the end of the “artist” field, and into the end of the “song” field. For example, the song “Brooklyn’s Finest” by Jay-Z will be listed with the artist as “Jay-Z feat. The Notorious B.I.G.,” however, if you elect to use this option, TuneUp will change the artist field to “Jay-Z” and add “featuring The Notorious B.I.G.” to the end of the song title. This feature is great for ensuring that when sorting iTunes by artist, all songs come up in the correct order.

  • Merge artist names with “And,” “&” and “and”: This feature tells TuneUp to compile everything with “And,” “&” and “and” into one category, and cleans your music with a normalized “and.” So, for example, if you had two Bob Marley songs, one was by “Bob Marley and the Wailers” and the other by “Bob Marley & the Wailers,” TuneUp would clean both songs so that the cleaned tracks’ “artist” field will appear as “Bob Marley and the Wailers.”

  • Normalize Album endings with “(disk #)”, “[CD #]” or variations: This feature tells TuneUp to recognize “disk #” and “CD #” in the song info, as the same thing, so that if you sort your music by album, “CD 2” of an album won’t come up before “Disc 1.”
