Tip #13: Seeing Red

Sometimes, as a shock to the Cleaning process, an album or track will appear in a bright red font. Don’t worry though, there are a handful of simple reasons this happens and a few handy ways to avoid it. The general explanation is that TuneUp is unable to write the saved information on the file, thus signaling (in red) that one of the following problems has occurred:

  • Unrecognized file formats. TuneUp only supports .mp3 and .m4a files, which are usually the most common types of music file formats.
  • The track has been moved, and cannot be located to be Cleaned. A simple fix for this issue is to search your computer for the file, open it in your media player, and then drag it into TuneUp.
  • The chosen cover art image is no longer available. Because TuneUp searches Google and Amazon images, sometimes the hosted album art no longer exists. An easy fix for this is to simply choose another cover art image by clicking the cover art thumbnail in Clean.
  • The file is “read only,” or “write protected,” . This means the file cannot have new information written on it, and thus will be read as incompatible with TuneUp’s Clean feature. You can check if the file is “read only” or “write protected” by right-clicking the file in the browser, and assure you have “write” permissions in the file’s properties.
  • The music is located on an uncommunicative external hard drive. Which will cause TuneUp to time out while trying to write the information to the track.
  • There are many work-arounds and variables to the Red Track issue.
